Property tax forum in Lake Zurich:Americans for Prosperity, a nonpartisan government watchdog organization, will host a property tax forum from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 16 at the Ela Area Public Library, 275 Mohawk Trail, Lake Zurich. Group representatives say one reason for the forum is local homeowners are being tapped more than ever to foot government bills, despite declining property values. Republican state Rep. Ed Sullivan of Mundelein and Ela Township Assessor John Barrington plan to explain how the property assessment process works. Potential ways for homeowners to reduce their property tax bills and how the state's financial outlook could affect taxpayers also will be part of the presentation. The day will be dedicated to all things canine, with demonstrations, vendors, crafts and activities, food, live music and a My Doggie and Me fashion show. Robin's Dog Stars, Crossroads Search and Rescue, and Sky Dogz Frisbee team will present demonstrations and in the afternoon, dogs will compete in an obstacle course. For information, call (847) 362-4636.Medical reservists awardedLake County's Medical Reserve Corps has been awarded a 2010 Mentor Award from the Office of the Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps. The group was given the award for its joint efforts with the Southeast Wisconsin Medical Corps in launching an H1N1 information phone bank. The two organizations also conducted a joint search rescue exercise this year. Lake County's Medical Reserve Corps is a community-based volunteer program that helps strengthen public health and improve emergency preparedness. The organization is one of only 19 similar organizations in the nation to receive the award. There are 885 reserve corps units across the country.
