Kane County naturalist program seeks applicants

The Kane County Certified Naturalist program is seeking applicants for its fall 2010 session.

On Tuesday, June 15, there will be informational meetings from 10 to 11 a.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. at the lodge at Brewster Creek Forest Preserve, 6N921 Route 25 in St. Charles.

Sponsored by the Kane County Forest Preserve District and the Fox Valley, Geneva and St. Charles park districts, the Kane County Certified Naturalist program features courses tailored to individuals who want to learn more about the preservation and conservation of green space in Kane County, as well as the county's cultural and natural history.

Program participants will complete a core curriculum of Tuesday evening classroom instruction and Saturday field instruction for five weeks. The program begins Tuesday, Sept. 14.

To earn certification, participants will have a year to complete 30 hours of volunteer time and an additional 20 hours of advanced instruction.

The program's fee is $200, which includes the five-week core curriculum, advanced coursework and course materials.

All classroom instruction will take place on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., and field sessions will take place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at agency parks and forest preserves. Transportation will be provided for the field sessions.

To RSVP for either of the June 15 informational meetings, call Julia Bourque at (630) 762-2741.
