With Williams set to deal, Sox respond with a win
Before Wednesday's game against the Tigers, White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said "I'm not blind" after declaring the time had finally come to make some roster changes.
"It's no surprise," Sox starting pitcher John Danks said on Thursday. "When you're not winning ballgames and you have guys whose contracts are coming up and A.J. (Pierzynski) and (Mark) Buehrle's situation there with 10-5, it isn't a big surprise. Kenny's as competitive as any one of us here. He doesn't want to make any moves as much as we don't want to lose anybody here.
"We're going to go out there and try to win as many ballgames, try to prevent that the best we can. But at the end of the day, it isn't in our control."
Hours after Williams' edict, the White Sox went out and rolled Detroit 15-3. And behind Danks' 1-hitter over 7 innings at U.S. Cellular Field Thursday afternoon, they blanked the Tigers 3-0.
"It's just what we think we can do," manager Ozzie Guillen said after the Sox won two straight for just the fourth time this season. "This team is built on pitching and good defense and they showed up today. Once in a while you're going to hit, and once in a while you're going to steal some bases."
While Williams vowed to make changes, he seems to prefer waiting closer to the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline than acting immediately.
But Pierzynski's 10-and-5 (10 years in the major leagues, 5 with the same team) rights begin Monday and he'll have full no-trade protection. Buehrle becomes a 10-5 player on July 9.
"I never thought this team would be in this situation," said Omar Vizquel, who homered and laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt Thursday. "When I came to spring training, I took a look around and you've got a great room of players here. It's about a time I think things turn around and we start playing better baseball. But we can't control what Kenny and Ozzie are going to do with the moves. All we have to do is keep playing our game and leave it all on the field."
Williams did say he's not going to rebuild with young players, so maybe the White Sox (26-33) could emerge as a more competitive team once he is done retooling.
"I just want a chance to win," struggling starter Jake Peavy said. "I believe it can happen here. I'm excited to be in the situation. Nothing's changed just because we haven't played well. I'm excited to be in a situation where you talk about it's not going to be a rebuilding process. If that were the case, I would certainly try to be moved, but that's the least of my worries.
"I want to try to get myself and the rest of this franchise headed in the right direction. I'm excited to be a Chicago White Sox. I've told you guys that since day one. I'm excited to play for an owner (Jerry Reinsdorf) that's passionate and people who are in charge who care truly about winning. It's just unfortunate the situation we're in."
