Elgin police nab two in robbery
A pair of teenagers face charges of robbing a man in Elgin of his MP3 player and cell phone earlier this week.
Jeremy G. Stokes, 19, of the 200 block of Jefferson Avenue, Elgin, and a 16-year-old boy were each charged with robbery and theft, Deputy Police Chief Cecil Smith said. The 16-year-old is being charged as a juvenile.
At 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, police were summoned to the 1300 block of Eagle Road. The victim told officers that Stokes and the boy stole his iPod Touch and LG cell phone by threatening to beat him up.
Stokes later tried to unsuccessfully sell the items at an apartment in the 1400 block of Getzelman Drive, Smith said.
But during his Thursday morning bond hearing, Stokes told Kane County Judge Bruce W. Lester that he had nothing to do with the crime and that he told the 16-year-old to give the items back.
"First of all, I didn't rob anybody," Stokes said. "... I was just with the person that did it."
Lester set his bond at $40,000; Stokes is due in court June 18 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
The 16-year-old, meanwhile, is being held at the Kane County Youth Home in St. Charles, Smith said.
Robbery is a Class 2 felony that carries a prison sentence ranging from three and seven years upon conviction.
