Antioch High's softball team heads for 3A state semifinals

Antioch's softball team is on the trip of a lifetime - to play in the IHSA Class 3A state semifinals at noon Friday in East Peoria.

It's the first-ever trip downstate in softball for the Sequoits, who will play the Metamora team that won the LaSalle-Peru supersectional.

Sequoits team members boarded buses at the school Thursday morning as they were cheered on by family, friends and both basketball programs. They headed to Eureka College for a quick workout before a team dinner.

"You don't know how it's going to turn out, but the girls have been in these types of situations before, so they can go out and have fun," athletic Director Steve Schoenfelder said Thursday.

Antioch boasts a 31-5 record and has hit a state-record 48 home runs. Coach Jeff Tylka's Sequoits are led by Georgetown-bound shortstop Allie Anttila (12 home runs), Loyola-bound third baseman Lauren Moore (. 468 batting average, 5 home runs), Wisconsin-Parkside-bound center fielder Samie Seamon (11 home runs) and junior pitcher Olivia Duehr (20-5 record, 8 home runs), who has committed to Northwestern.
