Don't mess with senior tax rebate

It was a far wiser person than I who said, "You can tell a lot about a country by the way they treat their senior citizens."

Our Elgin City Council leaders want to take away our Senior Citizens property tax rebate again. We senior citizens are already struggling with our Social Security frozen and now our city council wants to kick the elderly to the curb again by taking away our $200 annual property tax rebate. We seniors voted the riverboat in here and help support it!

Your senior citizens are the backbone and founding forefathers of this country. We are the people that read our newspapers and pay close attention to the news on the TV and radio. We know why our kids and grand kids can't find jobs. We are watching our leaders.

Ask any election judge at the polls and they will tell you that the most of the voters are senior citizens.

We are watching you, Elgin City Council. Just because a lion is quite doesn't always mean it's sleeping.

Thank you, Daily Herald reporter Harry Hitzeman, for your complete coverage on these most important issues and for naming names.

We senior citizens still go downtown but young folks don't want to be seen shopping downtown. Your senior citizens can see every day who is working forever on the streets down there.

You want to find other uses for your senior citizens' money next year? You'd better think again. You want to phase out the senior citizens tax rebate? Think again.

Shame on you, Councilman David Kaptain, for even suggesting this. Mayor Ed Schock, where is your leadership? Our tax money pays all of your checks.

That $200 tax rebate means nothing to any of you but to many senior citizens it may mean the difference of food or medication.
