Carpentersville to improve roads, sidewalks
Carpentersville's aggressive capital improvement program will roll out for the 2010 season in the coming weeks with the village set to spend more than $10 million on street and sidewalk repairs and other infrastructure improvements.
Village Engineer Scott Marquardt and Public Works Director Bob Cole updated the village board recently on the past, present and future of the program that seeks to fix the 93 miles of roads, as well as sidewalks and utilities across the village - some of which have not been touched in more than two decades.
"Periodically we will get questions from residents about various streets," Marquardt said. "Periodically we update the board. This was an opportunity to present to the board the progress that has been made and how much has been done in the last several years."
The program began in 2006, and since then the village has repaved, reconstructed and repaired more than 23 miles of roadway and replaced dozens of miles of sidewalks and sewer and water mains.
This summer, the village will spend $10.3 million, adding another 11 miles of new pavement. The projects will include emergency road repairs, complete reconstruction of some roads and sidewalk rejuvenation. Marquardt said about $3.7 million of the funding is through county, state and federal programs such as the Kane County Community Development Block grant.
Village President Ed Ritter said the program has transformed the appearance of many areas in town by encouraging residents to revamp their own properties.
"Every time we improve a street, the residents start to improve their homes and take pride in their homes," Ritter said. "We are not only improving the streets, but also the attitudes of people toward the village."
