Bravo to life savers
Provena Mercy Medical Center held its annual Chiefs Dinner May 10 at the Hollywood Casino. The dinner acknowledges excellence in pre-hospital care in those serving the surrounding communities of Provena. Every month one exceptional ambulance call is designated as "Run of the Month" by our EMS medical director, Dr. David Sanchez. Of those 12 winners, one is selected as "Run of the Year." Ambulances from Aurora, Batavia, Big Rock, North Aurora, Sugar Grove, and Hinckley were all eligible for top honors.
The 2009-2010 "Run of the Year" honors went to Aurora University and Aurora Fire Department; the patient and her parents joined us in celebrating her miraculous recovery and to thank her rescuers. Paramedics on this incredible call were Chris Kjellesvik, John Paul, and Chris Oros with assist from Battalion Chief Mike McCue and firefighter Abe Sprinkle. The call was for a woman who had collapsed while running in the gym at Aurora University. Upon arrival by Engine 7, they found that AU athletic trainer Terry Smith had already begun CPR and had defibrillated the patient twice using Aurora University's AED and restored a viable pulse. The Aurora Fire Department took over and continued advanced life support.
After a week at Provena Mercy Medical Center she went home to her very grateful parents.
While all our providers offer great care day in and day out, this is a small way to show Provena's appreciation.
