Teahen out at least 6 weeks

Third baseman Mark Teahen was hoping to return sooner than the original estimate - four weeks - from a fractured middle right finger.

But after having surgery to place a pin in the finger on Thursday, the White Sox announced Teahen is expected to be sidelined a minimum of six weeks.

Manager Ozzie Guillen said he plans to stick with Omar Vizquel and Jayson Nix at third base. The Sox could also call up top prospect Brent Morel, who was promoted from Class AA Birmingham to AAA Charlotte earlier this week.

"If Teahen was hitting .390 and had 30 home runs and 120 RBI I would say: 'Hey, Kenny (Williams), please,' " Guillen said. "I think Vizquel is swinging the bat well right now. He will play third base good enough."

Guillen said he doesn't want to move Gordon Beckham from second base to third, where he played as a rookie last year. Beckham was back on the bench Thursday. He was 2-for-7 with 2 RBI against the Rangers on Tuesday and Wednesday, but Beckham is batting .169 (15-for-89) with 21 strikeouts in his last 26 games. He's also gone 95 at-bats without an extra-base hit.

Jayson Nix played second base Thursday.

"If Nix starts hitting then I'll play back Nix," Guillen said. "I don't say I'm going to bench (Beckham). I'm just saying if someone performs better than him, I have no choice. I need to win some games."

Remembering Griffey: Seattle's Ken Griffey Jr. retired Wednesday, and he was fondly remembered by the Sox. Griffey joined the White Sox in a 2008 trade and batted .260 with 3 home runs and 18 RBI in 41 games.

"From some of the rumors you hear, saying he's lazy and doesn't take batting practice and just kind of shows up when he wants to, I never experienced that," Mark Buehrle said. "He was a great guy. For having 20 years in the big leagues, he came over to a new team and fit in well."

Mitchell update: Outfielder Jared Mitchell, the Sox' first-round draft pick last year, is slowly recovering from a torn tendon in his left ankle suffered during a March 12 spring training game.

"I guess you could say it was a little frustrating," Mitchell said Thursday. "I try not to let it bother me too much because everything happens for a reason. I try not to worry how or why it happened, and just push forward to get better and get back."

Mitchell has been doing some pool work and he hopes to be able to participate in the Instructional League at the end of the season.

"I'm ecstatic about coming back 100 percent," Mitchell said. "I'm going good, and I'm looking forward to progressing every day."
