Mandatory Spanish is un-American
Stephanie Berreles' May 17 letter requesting Spanish being made mandatory for children in elementary school is way off the mark. This is the United States and the language is English. Most other countries have their schoolchildren learn English to be able to compete in the business world. Why should we force our children to learn another language when the immigrants refuse to learn ours? Would we be so quick to force our children to learn any other language? Learn voluntarily, not mandatorily. By the way, I took Spanish in high school - voluntarily. Let the Spanish-speaking immigrants learn English. Every other immigrant did.
