Larkin High student struck by car

A 17-year-old Larkin High School student was taken to hospital with minor head injuries Wednesday after he was hit by a car while crossing the street in front of the school.

Elgin police Sgt. Thomas Olson said at about 1:20 p.m. the student from Elgin entered the crosswalk on South McLean Boulevard near Van Street and crossed the two southbound lanes before he was struck by a Mitsubishi Galant as he approached the east side of the street. He was thrown back into the inside lane of traffic, police said.

Witnesses told police the inside lane of traffic heading north on McLean had come to a stop or was slowing, but the 42-year-old female driver of the Mitsubishi failed to give way to the pedestrian.

The student was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital with minor head injuries that are not considered life threatening, Olson said.

Olson said the incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Olson reminded drivers to be alert to more children around now that schools are on the verge of summer break.
