Elk Grove Village condo fire under investigation

The cause of a fire at an Elk Grove Village condominium is under investigation, officials said Thursday.

Firefighters were called to the 1700 block of Vermont about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday when a neighbor at the complex reported seeing smoke. When firefighters arrived, smoke was escaping from the unit's roof and vents.

"There were no visible flames," said Elk Grove Village Deputy Chief Scott Miller.

Investigators used thermal imaging cameras to find the heat source was coming from a bedroom hallway area, Miller said. Schaumburg and Itasca fire departments were called to assist.

Miller said the investigation to determine where and how the fire started continues. The unit sustained about $50,000 in damage, Miller said. The owner of the unit was in the process of moving out, so there was little damage reported to the contents. No one was in the home at the time.
