10th 'Taste of Des Plaines' kicks off Friday

After recently celebrating its 175th birthday, Des Plaines is gearing up for another anniversary this month.

The 10th annual Taste of Des Plaines will run Friday through Sunday, June 4-6, along Ellinwood Street in downtown.

This year's event, coordinated by volunteers of the Des Plaines Special Events Commission, will feature more free family entertainment, a lot more local food vendors and a car show.

The car show, sponsored by Black Dog Productions, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in front of the Des Plaines Library, 1501 Graceland Ave.

"The car show is an exciting new addition to our Taste," Taste Chairwoman Linda Forman said. "We hope everyone will stroll through and experience some of these classic vehicles."

In honor of the 10th anniversary, a limited number of commemorative T-shirts will be available for a nominal price, she added.

Raffle tickets also will be sold at the event for prizes from local businesses.

Children's activities include face painting, crafts by the Des Plaines Park District and the History Center, a moon walk, an obstacle course, hair flare and games.

In addition to the Taste, residents can enjoy a variety of activities in downtown this weekend including the Chamber of Commerce & Industry's Home, Health and Consumer EXPO, the Des Plaines Art Guild's 57th annual Art Fair at Metropolitan Square, Central Youth Baseball's special series of 14 Little League games behind Central School, 1526 Thacker St., or participate in the Des Plaines Park District's "Chase to the Taste" 5K Walk or Run Saturday.

The race is an official Chicago Area Runners Association registered race and a USA Track and Field certified course. Proceeds from the race go toward the park district's scholarship fund. For details, visit DPParks.org or call (847) 391-5700.

Residents can also visit the History Center for "Pies on the Porch" served at the Des Plaines Historical Society's 1907 Kinder Home, 789 Pearson St., and roam through the History Center's latest exhibit.

"This is a festive year for our community and we encourage everyone to celebrate with us," Des Plaines Mayor Marty Moylan said. "We're proud of our city and want everyone to come to our signature party."
