Do more trucks mean new rules in Bartlett?

Since 2008, more and more vehicles used for commercial purposes have been parked in residential areas in Bartlett.

Owners of these commercial vehicles claim the economy's downturn made them unable to rent out parking spaces and forced them to park at home to save money. They've asked Bartlett officials to loosen enforcement of parking restrictions.

With more and commercial vehicles parked in residential zones, some neighbors have complained to village hall. They don't like seeing large trucks parked in garages and driveways not big enough to accommodate the vehicles. The noise from diesel vehicles that need to be warmed up is obnoxious, they say. Some don't like the additional equipment, like tools and equipment racks, left on the back of a truck bed in plain street view.

Bartlett officials on Tuesday went over a proposal to address these concerns. A public hearing will be held before the village board votes on the matter.

The proposed amended ordinance clearly defines what type of commercial vehicles are allowed to be parked in the residential zones. They must not weigh more than 8,000 pounds. One equipment rack will be permitted. Lettering and signage will be permitted on no more than 20 percent of the side and rear of the vehicle. Equipment maybe stored on the truck's flatbed if it's covered. The vehicles must also be parked on a paved surface setback 10 feet from the rear or side of a property line. The village is proposing a three-year sunset closet as well.

The amendments don't apply to vehicle primarily for passenger use.

Village President Michael Kelly said the commercial vehicle issue was a big one for the community. The village board began discussions regarding the issue in February.
