Learn from senseless killing of Bowzer
We were deeply troubled by the recent shooting of Bowzer the beagle-cocker mix in Des Plaines by a police officer because it seems so utterly senseless. We immediately imagined this nightmare scenario happening to our dogs, who are similar in size and appearance to poor Bowzer and who get very excited by visitors - running, barking and jumping on anyone who comes through the door.
Ours are sweet, gentle, loving dogs who would not attack anyone in a menacing way; they just get carried away with excitement when people stop by. Our dogs are beloved members our family - not mere property. The thought of a public official who we trust to act in our best interest blatantly shooting them for this behavior is so frightening and disturbing that we are now afraid to call the police if we need help.
We sincerely hope the police department uses this tragic situation as an opportunity to review its policies for handling domestic animals. More empathy and compassion is needed and having officers perform some type of community service - such as helping out at an animal shelter - is a good way to get it.
By spending more time with dogs, perhaps our police can gain greater understanding and appreciation of their behavior so that in the future they will avoid shooting them at all costs.
