Chicago's lions don helmets for Hawks

Chicago's famous lions are officially roaring for the Hawks in their drive to capture the Stanley Cup.

The bronze lions that stand guard outside the Art Institute of Chicago were given custom-made Chicago Blackhawks helmets this morning, in advance of the team's first game of the championship series on Saturday night.

The oft-decorated 3-ton cats, which were placed at the art institute in 1894, will don the helmets through the Stanley Cup finals.

The Art Institute's statues were created by Edward L. Kemeys, who also in 1887 designed a colossal head of a buffalo for the facade of the station of the Pacific railroad at St. Louis, Missouri.

Chicago Blackhawks legend Bobby Hull was on hand to see the two bronze lions at the Art Institute of Chicago get some spiritwear to support his team. Mark Welsh | Staff Photographer
