Buffalo Grove teen Tasered after wielding knife
An 18-year-old Buffalo Grove man was hospitalized after police Tasered him at his home Tuesday night when he refused to drop a knife after a fight with his parents, police officials said.
Steve Husak, spokesman for the Buffalo Grove Police Department, said officers were called to the 500 block of Coventry Lane Tuesday night on a report that a man was walking around with a knife.
Upon arrival, Husak said, officers spotted the 18-year-old with the knife, screaming through the home's door. Officers repeatedly told the man to drop the knife, but he refused and, instead, threaten to cut himself, Husak said.
"They positioned themselves to the side of the offender and, after repeatedly telling him to drop the knife, they were forced to use a Taser on him," Husak said. "He dropped the knife after being hit by the Taser, and the officer kicked it away while telling him to place his arms behind his back."
The man refused, Husak said, then punched one of the officers.
"The officer was forced to redeploy the Taser again to get him to comply," he said. "After redeploying the Taser, the offender complied and he was properly handcuffed."
Police are withholding the man's identity pending charges, Husak said.
He was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he remained Wednesday morning with non-life-threatening injuries, Husak said.
Police said they later learned officers were called to the home after the 18-year-old got into an argument with his parents, then punched his father. His mother then tried to call 911, police said, but the 18-year-old put his arms around her, causing her to fall, Husak said.
When he is released from the hospital, the man will be charged with domestic battery, interfering with reporting of domestic violence, resisting a peace officer and battery, Husak said.
