Naming school done with deliberation

It seems that some readers may have been misled by the first sentence of the article, "District 15 urged to put board member's name on a school" ("... officials are fond of putting the monikers of longtime administrators and board members on District 15 schools.").

First, the current suggestion to rename a school did not originate with any District 15 board member or administrator. It came from a community member who served the district honorably since 1951.

District 15 has had 24 schools in its 64-year history, and the names of 14 of those schools have honored individuals.

However, just six were given the names of those who served District 15, and only two of those six were board members who voluntarily gave of their time and talents. No District 15 school has been named after a board member in more than 30 years.

The decision to name or rename a school is certainly not one to be taken lightly. But naming/renaming can be done, in fact it has been done while still ably meeting other significant challenges.
