Elgin cops question 2 men in stabbing death of Larkin student
A 19-year-old Elgin man has been charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted armed robbery in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old Larkin High School sophomore named Edgar Guerra-Guzman Saturday during a "robbery gone bad."
Joshua D. Dunbar, of 646 Margaret Place, was charged with Guerra-Guzman's murder after a review of the charges by the Kane County state's attorney's office, officials said late Monday.
Police were called to the 300 block of North Jackson Street about 12:15 a.m. after reports of a person lying in the street. The area is on the near west side about three blocks west of the Fox River.
Officers found Guerra-Guzman, who had a stab wound to his chest. He was transported to Provena St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Elgin Deputy Police Chief Cecil Smith said authorities interviewed two people Monday afternoon. He said police did not initially release the victim's name because it could have hurt the investigation. Grief counselors were made available at Larkin High School Monday.
"It might have been a robbery gone bad," Smith said Monday afternoon. "As it looks right now, there's no gang ties at this point."
The stabbing death is the third homicide in Elgin this year.
A police news release said the victim had an altercation with two men, who fled the area before officers arrived.
Detectives from the Elgin Police Major Investigations Division are continuing to investigate, including following up on leads on a second suspect, described as a Hispanic man, about 20 years old, standing about 5 feet 7 inches, weighing about 170 pounds, with a heavy build and short hair. He was last seen in a blue sweatshirt and jeans.
Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call the Elgin Police Major Investigations Division at (847) 289-2601, or the anonymous Crime Line at (847) 695-4195.
