End name-calling to start real debate
This is in regard to the May 10 fence post letter from Ms. Puente and Mr. Meza. I agree that talk about immigration is not always rational but it goes both ways. You say that 70 percent of Latinos in Illinois are either legal immigrants or citizens. Wonderful, but that still leaves the other 30 percent that are here illegally.
There is room for compromise on this issue but it is difficult to want to compromise when anytime the subject is brought up anyone not for full amnesty is labeled a racist and a xenophobe.
In 1986 congress granted amnesty and promised to fix immigration and enforcement issues. They did not and now the issue is worse than ever. As the saying goes: fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
I fully welcome all who come to this country legally and follow our laws but those whose first action is to show their contempt for this country do not deserve such respect. I welcome an open dialogue but only when the name calling is left on the playground.
