Family of slain Chicago officer gets $50,000 check
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has given $50,000 to the family of an off-duty officer killed during a robbery attempt.
Officer Thomas Wortham IV died Wednesday after being shot by several men who police say were trying to steal his motorcycle.
Wortham and his father exchanged gunfire with the suspects, killing one and critically injuring another. Two other men have been charged with murder and attempted robbery.
Wortham joined the police department in June 2007 and served in the Englewood district.
He was also a first lieutenant in the Army National Guard and had returned from a deployment to Iraq on March 30.
Since 2007, the foundation has given more than $1 million to the families of officers who have been killed or injured.
