Elgin police search for shooting suspect

Elgin police are searching for suspects after a man was shot Friday afternoon on the city's east side.

Police said the victim entered the Sherman Hospital Immediate Care Center on Center Street at 12:18 p.m. Friday, seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his chest.

Police did not reveal the 19-year-old victim's name.

The victim told police he and a passenger were driving south on Waverly Drive just after noon Friday, and noticed a second vehicle following them. He pulled to the curb in the 700 block of Waverly, police said, to see why he was being followed.

After pulling over he noticed a second vehicle drive up next to them, and the passenger of the second vehicle pulled out a handgun and fired a shots at both the victim and passenger before driving off, police said.

The passenger in the victim's vehicle drove him to the immediate care center, where Elgin Fire Department paramedics then responded and took the victim to the Sherman Hospital emergency room on Randall Road.

The Sherman staff said the gunshot is not life-threatening, police said.

Although the investigation is ongoing, Deputy Police Chief Cecil Smith said it's believed the shooting was gang related.

"This case is still in progress, but we believe that is where it is headed," Smith said.

Anyone with information in the shooting should call the Elgin Police Department Major Investigation Division at (847) 289-2600 or Sgt. Dan O'Shea with the Elgin Gang Unit at (847) 289-2891.
