Rolling Meadows chamber celebrates success
From Rolling Meadows to Washington.
That kind of success story played out for J.C. Restoration, which picked up the Business of the Year award from the Rolling Meadows Chamber of Commerce on Thursday before leaving this weekend for national recognition.
Specializing in disaster relief, J.C. Restoration was named the top small business in the city of Rolling Meadows and in the state.
"They work seven days a week, 24 hours a day; they're always there to help you," said Tony Gurgiolo, chamber president.
"All their equipment is in Rolling Meadows, ready to take care of you, whether it's fire or water damage. They're a good company to have around."
Its president, Warner Cruz, has already left for ceremonies in Washington next week, mounted by the Small Business Administration, as officials celebrate the importance of small businesses and their role in driving the nation's economy.
In his place, Steve Crost, the company's general manager, accepted the award, surrounded by several employees and their spouses.
Rolling Meadows' Circle of Success dinner took place at the Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows. This year's edition drew nearly 100 people, from small and independently owned businesses, to large corporate members, including AT&T and Northrop Grumman.
Rolling Meadows Mayor Ken Nelson served as emcee and helped present the awards.
"We're so fortunate to have such a good relationship with the chamber," Nelson said.
"It creates a nice synergy when you have city government and the business community working together."
Among its top award winners was David Sheer, vice president of the Steel Supply Co., who was named Businessman of the Year. He is retiring this month, after a 40-year career with the 106-year steel distributor, including 39 years in Rolling Meadows.
Rolling Meadows Alderman Barb Lusk was named Community Leader of the Year, while Barry Krumstock, assistant city manager of Rolling Meadows, was named Chamber Volunteer of the Year.
Among corporate awards, the defense contractor Northrop Grumman picked up the Community Outreach Award.
Some of the company's initiatives include working with teens to promote careers in technology, as well as mentoring in schools and helping with community service projects, such as with Clearbrook and the American Cancer Society.
"We're the largest defense contractor in the state and the largest employer in Rolling Meadows," said Ellen Hamilton, communications director.
"We have a corporate commitment to support causes our employees are involved in."
The Walmart store in Rolling Meadows picked up the Community Enhancement Award, while AT&T was named the chamber's communications partner.
