Christians can still believe in evolution

To Philip Roos who wrote "Darwin's theory has been discredited time and time again", I would point out that 150 years of observation and discovery have confirmed the theory of common descent and change through time beyond a reasonable doubt. The discrediting that he refers to has, itself, been discredited by both the scientific community and the Federal courts.

Darwin's evolution has been used as the basis for many of the advances in biology and medicine we have seen over the recent years. What bothers me most about Mr. Roos' comments is the implication that one cannot accept the observable facts and still be a Christian.

Acceptance of the facts of evolution does not prove, or disprove, the existence of God. It is because of the narrow-mindedness of people like Mr. Roos, that Dr. Bruce Waltke (a preeminent Old Testament scholar) resigned his position from the Reformed Theological Seminary.

Dr. Waltke had stated that "... if the data is overwhelmingly in favor of evolution, to deny that reality will make us a cult ...". Because of this statement, he was asked to resign. I would direct Mr. Roos to the website biologos.org to view discussions by many Christians on how they reconcile their faith and evolution.

I will close with a comment that was posted by Charlotte Ward, associate professor of physics, emeritus at Auburn University. Professor Ward is an Evangelical Christian and a scientist. She wrote, "I believe we dishonor God and show an ungodly hubris when we think we know all there is to know about God's methods, either in our own lives or the natural universe."
