St. Charlesbull; Carmen A. Bartalone, 60, of the 1600 block of East Main Street, was charged Thursday with retail theft, according to a police report. Owners of a tobacco shop on the 0-100 block of Illinois Street were reviewing security footage when they observed Bartalone enter the store's walk-in humidor. Bartalone chose a cigar from the display shelf, looked over his right shoulder toward the main area of the store, then, with his left hand, took two other cigars from their box and placed them in his pocket. After determining that Bartalone had no prior criminal history, police went to Bartalone's place of employment to serve him with a retail theft citation. The value of the two cigars was $5.15 each. Bartalone admitted to police that he stole the cigars, but responded, "Do you know how much money I spend there?" Police informed Bartalone that his patronage of the store does not give him permission to steal from it. Bartalone was advised that he is no longer welcome at the store. bull; Amanda Lea Johnson, 20, of the 2N300 block of Bloomingdale Road in Glendale Heights, was charged Sunday with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, according to a police report. Police encountered Johnson while investigating a potential battery at a nearby restaurant. While questioning Johnson, police noticed an odor of alcohol on her breath. She was cited for underage drinking, but police also found two outstanding warrants, including a previous charge of unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor for which she failed to appear in court. bull; Matthew T. Pienkowski, 18, of the 12N300 block of Waughon Road in Hampshire, was charged Saturday with aggravated battery, according to a police report. Officers were called to a parking lot on the north side of Charlestowne Mall, near the theater entrance for a report of an aggravated assault. Upon arrival, a male subject told police another man had pulled a knife on him, but had left the scene in a silver minivan just before the police arrived. Other police arriving at the scene located the vehicle and stopped it. The complaining man said Pienkowski originally drove by him and yelled something from the van. As the van came back down the parking aisle, the man then attempted to stop the driver to find out what was wrong. Pienkowski then exited the vehicle and told the man to get out of the roadway. The man then told Pienkowski to get back in his van and leave. Pienkowski then approached the man and threatened him with bodily harm by telling him that he should be careful because you never know if the person you are confronting has a weapon. Pienkowski then pulled out a knife and pointed the blade toward the man. The man then told Pienkowski to put he knife away. A bystander then approached to inform the group that the police had been called. Pienkowski then got back in his vehicle and attempted to leave. Witnesses confirmed this version of the events. Police located the knife under a seat in Pienkowski's vehicle. A female in Pienkowski's van filmed the incident.
