St. Charles Twp. man held in sex assault, vehicle theft

A St. Charles Township man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl and stealing her mother's vehicle, police said Wednesday.

Donald Van Natter, 40, faces two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count each of criminal sexual assault and possession of a stolen vehicle, all felonies, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.

Lt. Pat Gengler said Van Natter sexually assaulted a girl he knew on May 9 at his home on the 7N600 block of Stevens Road, then took off in the victim's mother's Jeep Cherokee.

Gengler said the victim's mother reported the incident to police, who apprehended Van Natter in Elgin later that day and held him on a preliminary charge of possessing a stolen vehicle.

The sexual assault charges were filed Wednesday after officers concluded their investigation, Gengler said.

"It appears it was an isolated incident," he said of the alleged assault.

Van Natter was being held in the Kane County jail Wednesday on $20,000 bond. He has no prior criminal history in Kane County, according to court records.

His next court date is May 27.
