Silent bike processions will honor fallen cyclists

Fallen bicyclists are being honored in a 10-mile ride of silence in Chicago.

Cyclists on Wednesday evening will pedal silently past the sites of local crash victims. These are often marked by "ghost" bikes, painted white and standing like haunting statues on street corners.

There are about a dozen ghost bikes in Chicago. The tradition is loosely organized in several major cities nationwide.

Wednesday's ride starts at 6:30 p.m. at the eternal flame on Daley Plaza. Similar rides are planned in Evanston, Arlington Heights and Joliet.

Event partners include the Active Transportation Alliance, a group that promotes biking and other safe alternative modes of transportation.
