Looking ahead to winter, Palatine buys 7,000 tons of road salt

The Palatine village council on Monday approved purchasing 7,000 tons of road salt for the upcoming winter season.

The village will pay $456,960, or $65.28 per ton, to Cargill Deicing Technology of North Olmstead, Ohio for the salt and delivery. The price was $1.15 per ton more than last year, but still far less than the $200 per ton a couple years ago when the region faced a salt shortage. About $159,000 remains in the village's 2010 operating budget for salt purchases.
