Lake County briefs

West Nile hotline:The Lake County Health Department has reactivated the West Nile virus hotline for residents to report dead bird sightings and areas of stagnant water, or to get more information on the signs and symptoms of West Nile virus. The number is (847) 377-8300. Health officials said no human cases of the disease were reported during the past two years, but say it's important to protect against the mosquito-born virus. Suggestions include limiting outdoor activity at dusk, making sure door and window screens are in good repair and applying mosquito repellent on a consistent basis.Rabid bat found:A bat found in a Grayslake church May 12 has tested positive for rabies, Lake County Health Department officials said Tuesday. It's the second bat to test positive for rabies in the county this year. The bat was found by a janitor in a bathroom sink. The janitor was advised to be vaccinated after handling the bat. Anyone who has direct contact with a bat or notices a bat acting in an unusual manner, such as flying in daylight or lying on the ground, should call the health department at (847) 949-9925.Gurnee cops recognized by village board:Seventeen Gurnee police officers were recognized for their traffic enforcement efforts at a village board meeting Monday night. Mayor Kristina Kovarik and Police Chief Robert Jones presented the awards. Five cops received the police department's DUI Enforcement Award for making a minimum of 20 drunken-driving arrests in 2009. Receiving the award were Dion Snyder with 30 arrests, Kirk Helgesen with 24 arrests, J.R. Nauseda with 23 arrests, Jason Kalinowski with 21 arrests and Phil Mazur with 20 arrests.
