Rolling Meadows apartment fire displaces 80

About 80 residents were displaced from an apartment building on the 4700 block of Arbor Drive in Rolling Meadows after a Sunday morning fire.

The Rolling Meadows Fire Department responded to an activated fire alarm at 6:05 a.m. Sunday, said fire officials, and discovered heavy smoke in the building's main entry and stairway.

Many residents needed rescue from the balconies due to large amounts of smoke in the hallway, but no one was injured, officials added.

With the help of ten area fire departments, the flames were extinguished by 6:48 a.m., said officials, and damage to the building is estimated at $75,000.

Officials said local branches of the American Red Cross helped relocate temporarily displaced families.

Rolling Meadows Police, fire department and the Illinois Fire Marshall are investigating the cause of the blaze.
