Dundee-Crown knocks off Round Lake in 4 OTs

It took a little over 115 minutes, but Dundee-Crown was finally able to get a shot past Round Lake standout goalie Angie Carey.

Chargers' junior Mallory Fryer ended the marathon with a goal at the 4:57 mark of the fourth overtime to give fourth-seeded D-C a 1-0 win over fifth seed Round Lake in a first-round game of the Class 3A Barrington regional in Carpentersville Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers (5-13-3) will play top-seeded and host Barrington Wednesday in the regional semifinals at 5 p.m.

"Their goalie was so good," said Fryer of Carey. "She made a lot of great saves. It was a long game and we really wanted it. It was a great win for us."

D-C, which outshot Round Lake 17-3, tested Carey the whole game, but couldn't score until midway through the fourth overtime. The Round Lake senior ended with 13 saves.

The Chargers' Hannah Larsen had three golden opportunities to score. Larson had two breakaway attempts in the first half, but Carey made the diving save in each instance for the Panthers (4-14).

Larson's best chance came with 4:40 left in regulation when she blasted a shot on goal from 10 yards out, but the ball hit the post.

With 12:10 left in the first half, Fryer was tackled in the penalty box by a Round Lake defender and was awarded a penalty kick. Fryer's kick went over the net which kept the game scoreless.

"Their goalie played a great game and made great save after great save," said D-C coach Sebastian Falinski. "We hung in there and did a good job of possessing the ball. We have lost a lot of close games this season so this is a great win. It is a nice reward for these kids because they have worked so hard. We are excited to play a great team like Barrington Tuesday."

Round Lake coach Andres Orbe praised Carey and his team's effort.

"Angie Carey has been our rock and leader all season long," said Orbe. "She gave us great senior leadership all season long. We stayed in the game against the good teams because of Angie. She made a lot of great saves. The girls gave 100 percent effort and gave 100 percent effort all season. We had our chances but we just couldn't finish."
