Elgin library celebrates national recognition
Like a movie star celebrating after an Oscar win, the Gail Borden Library in Elgin threw a party to revel in the institution receiving one of the nation's highest honors for libraries.
Hundred of visitors crowded into the library's atrium Saturday as part of a community celebration in honor of the library receiving the 2009 National Medal for Museum and Library Services. The medal was awarded to 10 libraries nationally and Gail Borden Library was one of three public libraries to receive the award.
"It is the most prestigious honor a library can receive," said Miriam Lytle, director of community services and program development. "We were awarded because of our innovation and community engagement. We have a long history of innovation here at Gail Borden Library."
Library officials and local political figures including Congressman Bill Foster, Secretary of State Jesse White, State Rep. Keith Farnham and Sen. Michael Noland were on hand to offer congratulations to the library staff.
"The library is a wonderful institute," said Rick McCarthy, president of the library board of trustees. "We drive down the toll road and see signs for the Riverboat Casino ... but we all know where the crown jewel of Elgin really is; we are standing in it right now."
The party kicked off with a performance from members of Pan Chicago, a steel drum band. A flash-mob of dancers surprised visitors with a choreographed routine to Kool & the Gang's "Celebration." A magician and juggler entertained the hoards of young children, while Abraham Lincoln, Galileo and Gail Borden impersonators educated the older crowd.
Borden brought a milk condensing plant to Elgin and his heirs later donated land for the library.
The Jesse White Tumblers reached death-defying heights during their performance.
Shelly Shales, of Elgin, joined in the fun with her daughter, Ellen Shales, 7, and Ellen's friend Alayna Kulesza, 6, from West Chicago.
"It is very nice that the library received the award," said Shales, who said she and her daughter visit the library once a week. "They deserve it. It is a beautiful library."
