Vote for those who take you seriously

Sheriff Pat Perez displayed a disrespectful disregard for Mr. Rogalla's viewpoint during a red-light camera hearing in Geneva.

Perez's behavior was an alarming example of how uninterested our local government is in considering any real opposition to this topic. Mr. Rogalla spoke of the need for a better appeals process, consideration of weather, and reasonable fines. These were all valid points, which were summarily dismissed with Sheriff Perez asking if Mr. Rogalla had lost his mind.

Contrary to what Sheriff Perez and Mayor Kevin Burns would like residents to believe, improved safety is not always accomplished when red-light cameras are installed. The Chicago Tribune reported Dec. 18, 2009, that accidents rose at half of the 14 suburban intersections outfitted with red-light cameras. The number of crashes fell at only five of those intersections and two others showed little change. The Tribune cited state and IDOT data, not data provided by the red-light companies.

I believe red-light cameras are being installed to generate revenue. I urge residents of Geneva who oppose the installation of these cameras to voice your opinion and cast your future votes for politicians who will take your opinions and desires seriously.
