Far west side Elgin man arrested on drug charges

Elgin police executing a search warrant Thursday night on the city's far west side turned up cash, cocaine and suspected drug packaging materials inside a home in the 1100 block of Reserve Drive, police said.

They later arrested Rahman J. Cole, 33, of the same address, on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a park and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Cole's home is within 1000 feet of Kendall Park at Reserve Drive and Anna Way, said Deputy Police Chief Cecil Smith.

Smith said the drug unit searched Cole's house while nobody was home and found several clear plastic bags next to a safe and Cole's identification.

Once Cole returned home at 9:40 p.m., police secured him by the garage, found keys to the safe and opened it. Inside they discovered 7.3 grams of cocaine, at least $200 cash and hundreds more clear plastic bags, Smith said.

Kane County Judge Bruce W. Lester set Cole's bond Friday at $95,000. He is due back in court May 21 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a park is a Class X felony, punishable by a mandatory six to 30 years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.
