Carpentersville student accused of robbery
An admitted gang member from Carpentersville faces a robbery charge alleging he beat up an acquaintance and stole that person's iPod.
Kelvin Gavina, 17, of the 600 block of Jefferson Avenue, could spend up to seven years in prison if convicted of the Class 2 felony charged stemming from the incident Thursday night.
Gavina, who said he's a student at Dundee-Crown High School, arranged to meet the victim at 9 p.m. at a secluded park on Golf View Lane, said Cmdr. Timothy Bosshart.
When the victim arrived, Bosshart said, Gavina put him in a chokehold while another man punched him in the face. Gavina then threw the victim's mobile phone into bushes and stole his iPod, Bosshart said.
During his Friday morning bond hearing, Gavina told Kane County Judge Bruce W. Lester that he is a gang member with prior juvenile arrests for mob action and aggravated assault.
Lester set his bond at $30,000. His next court date is May 26 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
