Canoe race set for Sunday

The 53rd annual Des Plaines River Canoe & Kayak Marathon will likely be held as planned, said the marathon's co-chair, Jack Snarr.

The event is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Sunday, beginning in Libertyville and ending near Prospect Heights.

"I think the only thing that would interfere is another rainstorm, which is not at all expected," he said. "So I'm reasonably sure it's a go."

There are some safety concerns to be addressed, however.

For example, there may be locations where branches hang down and dip in the water. They could catch an unwary participant.

Snarr said safety boats will be placed at those locations to keep people away.

In addition, marathon workers are making sure the course is clear of falling trees.

Around 500 boats are expected to participate.
