Tougher penalties for DUI save lives
As a regular reader of the Fence Post, I sometimes agree (50 percent) and sometimes disagree (50 percent) but am seldom shocked by the comments of your readers.
On a recent Sunday, Michael Kenny of Arlington Heights wrote "a friend who was recently arrested for driving on a revoked license as a result of a DUI conviction ... I thought he would pay the price and may spend a few days in jail and maybe some fines ... the state passed (a) law allowing a municipality to seize a vehicle if the driver was driving on a revoked license as a result of a DUI ... everyone just needs a piece of the DUI pie".
In the U.S. during 1982 there were 26,173 alcohol related fatalities.
In 2008 there were 13,846 alcohol related fatalities, almost a 50 percent reduction.
The efforts of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) were a significant reason for the drastic increases in the awareness of problem of DUI's and the drastic increase in the penalties for DUI related offenses.
In 2008 there were 434 individuals in Illinois that died in alcohol related fatalities. I wonder what the families of those individuals think of Mr. Kenny's thoughts.
