Man injured in fire at his Huntley home

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed much of a single-family home in Huntley after midnight Wednesday, firefighters said.

A man who lived in the house was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with chest pains and was later released. A woman was able to escape unharmed.

Firefighters were dispatched to the two-story, single-family home on the 11000 block of Leland Lane just after midnight Wednesday, Huntley Fire Protection District officials said.

Heavy flames were visible on the second floor and were moving swiftly when firefighters arrived on the scene, Huntley Deputy Chief Keith Mallegni said.

"It was through the roof when we got there," Mallegni said. "We made an aggressive attack on it and managed to get it under control quick."

Mallegni said the home suffered about $700,000 in damages. The heat also damaged siding and insulation on two neighboring homes.

Investigators late Wednesday had not yet determined what sparked the blaze.

"The fire did start on the outside of the structure," Mallegni said. "As far as the exact cause, we don't know."

Firefighters from West Dundee, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Marengo, Elgin, Rutland-Dundee, Union, Lakewood, Hampshire, Cary, McHenry, Woodstock, Burlington, Pingree Grove and Carpentersville were also called in to assist either at the scene or to cover the fire stations in Huntley.
