Aurora man guilty of attempted murder
An Aurora man was found guilty Tuesday of trying to kill a man authorities said he and his girlfriend lured to her apartment two years ago.
A jury deliberated about two hours before convicting Dwayne Shipp, 38, of the 100 block of Creston Circle, of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm stemming from the May 4, 2008 incident, according to the Kane County state's attorney's office.
Prosecutors say Shipp and 49-year-old Valerie A. Carpenter lured the victim, a man with whom Carpenter had a previous relationship, to her apartment in the 400 block of North Lake Street in Aurora, intending to threaten him.
When Carpenter and the victim arrived about 11:15 p.m., authorities said, Shipp came out of a hallway armed with a handgun. A struggle over the gun ensued, allowing the victim to escape and run from the building while calling police. Shipp followed, authorities said, and shot the victim four times in the leg.
Shipp will face between 31 years to life in prison when sentenced June 24 by Judge Allen Anderson.
Carpenter is charged with one count of attempted murder, and two counts of aggravated battery. Her next court appearance is scheduled July 28.
