Cougars, Peoria to play 'Road to Wrigley' game July 7
The Chicago Cubs today announced the third annual "Road to Wrigley" minor league baseball game at Wrigley Field, to be played Wednesday, July 7 at 7:05 p.m. CST between the Peoria Chiefs and Kane County Cougars. PNC Bank, which has acquired National City, will continue the bank's sponsorship of the game.
Road to Wrigley presented by PNC will include family-friendly priced tickets, an array of activities for children of all ages and a fun atmosphere filled with traditional minor league attractions. Fans will be entertained between innings by the mascots of both teams and The Famous Chicken, who was rated America's favorite mascot by Forbes in 2010. Kids 14-years-and-younger will also be able to run the bases at Wrigley Field after the game ends.
This year's matchup marks a rematch between the game's two inaugural teams. On July 29, 2008, the first Road to Wrigley game drew 32,103 fans to Wrigley Field for an official Single-A Midwest League contest between the Chiefs and Cougars.
"We look forward to welcoming back our original Road to Wrigley teams," said Crane Kenney, President, Chicago Cubs. "The fan response was impressive in 2008 and we're hoping they return to the Friendly Confines to see another great minor league baseball game."
"This is a great day for the Chiefs, and we are thankful for the opportunity afforded to us by the Cubs to return to Wrigley Field," said Chiefs President Rocky Vonachen. "It was a great game and atmosphere there in 2008 and we look forward to another outstanding night in Chicago. The Cubs have been tremendous partners with us, and this is going to be an outstanding day for the Chiefs and (Kane County) Cougars players, staffs and fans."
Peoria Chiefs President Rocky Vonachen, father Pete Vonachen and Kane County Cougars Vice President & General Manager Jeff Sedivy will announce Road to Wrigley presented by PNC to fans in a pre-game ceremony at today's home game against the Florida Marlins. Team mascots Homer (Peoria Chiefs) and Ozzie the Cougar (Kane County Cougars) will also be present. The group will be available to media for interviews from 4-6 p.m. preceding pre-game festivities.
Peoria became a Cubs Single-A affiliate in 2005 and is located approximately 165 miles southwest of Chicago. Kane Country is affiliated with the Oakland Athletics and plays in nearby Geneva, IL, less than 30 miles from the Chicago border.
