Hanover Park teen charged in shooting

A Glenbard North High School senior weeks from graduation may instead face prison if convicted of a weekend shooting outside a party in Hanover Park.

Miangelo M. Roberts, 17, of the 1700 block of McCormick Lane, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery with a firearm.

But, at a Monday bond hearing, DuPage County prosecutors said they are weighing whether to also pursue attempted murder charges. The felony carries up to a 20-year prison sentence. Roberts did not outwardly react, but a relative in court said Roberts is an honor student and athlete who is near graduation.

Associate Judge Liam Brennan set bond at $500,000. Roberts' family must post the required 10 percent for his release.

Prosecutors said a group of five people pulled up to the party about 11:55 p.m. Saturday on the 1700 block of Goddard Lane and members got into an argument with Roberts, who had just left the gathering and confronted them about an earlier gang-related altercation involving his brother.

Roberts is accused of twice firing a .357-caliber handgun at close range as the vehicle sped off, striking one of the occupants in the buttocks. The victim was transported to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital in Glendale Heights for nonlife threatening injuries.

Prosecutors said Roberts confessed and led them to the weapon, located inside his home.
