Hefler captures honors at Lewis

Glenbard West graduate Jayme Hefler, now playing softball at Lewis, was named last week the Great Lakes Valley Conference freshman of the year.

Hefler, Daily Herald All-Area as a senior, led the Flyers in batting average (.438), hits (67), runs scored (49) and stolen bases (32) while batting leadoff. Her 49 runs and 67 hits placed her second in school history, while her on-base percentage of .491 is ranked third. Lewis sophomore pitcher Karissa Habel from Downers Grove South clamed All-GLVC second team honors after going 16-7 with a team-best 73 strikeouts and 1.75 ERA.

Ward transfers to Illinois: The Illinois volleyball program recently announced the addition of Florida transfer Colleen Ward.

The 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Naperville North was the Daily Herald's 2007 All-Area captain, and was an All-Southeastern Conference second-team selection in 2009. She ranked second on the team and 10th in the SEC in kills per set (3.09). Ward joins Laura DeBruler, a first-team All-American in 2009 from Downers Grove North, on the outside for the Illini.

Andresen a hitting machine at Loyola: Brooke Andresen, a Daily Herald All-Area outfielder from Downers Grove South now a freshman at Loyola, had her school record 25-game hitting streak snapped on May 1 in game one of a doubleheader against Cleveland State. The rookie shortstop recorded hits in each of the final two games of the season, hitting safely in 27 of 28 games. Andresen's hitting streak at the time was the longest in Division I. On the season Andresen is hitting .384 with 58 hits, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homers, 21 RBI, 4 steals and 35 runs scored.
