Fontenot says losing job part of the game

CINCINNATI - With the Cubs calling up shortstop Starlin Castro on Friday, manager Lou Piniella hasn't had time to talk with everybody involved in the chain reaction.

As of Saturday evening, that included former starting second baseman Mike Fontenot, who's the odd-man out after Ryan Theriot moved from shortstop to second.

"I'm going to talk to Fontenot today," Piniella said. "Yesterday, he wasn't, he wasn't very - I did enough talking yesterday, put it that way. But I will, I'll talk to him today."

As any player would be, Fontenot isn't thrilled with losing playing time, but he put the best face on it Saturday.

"Yeah, I was frustrated with the situation, but you get over it," Fontenot said. "It's part of the game. I'm a team player, so I'm not going to try to sulk or anything like that. When I get my chance, I'm going to try to come in and do things to help the team. It's all I can do. It's out of my hands."

Fontenot entered Saturday having hit safely in his last 11 starts. In Friday's 14-7 victory over the Reds, he hit a pinch- hit grand slam. It was the first grand slam of his career.

"I was pretty excited about it. I don't think I've done that since college ball in intrasquad games, a grand slam in general," he said. "I was pretty pumped up about that.

"I feel like I've done well this season. I've been having a good season offensively and defensively. Just try to keep things going like that whenever I get my chance."
