Man shot to death in Zion

Four people were shot, one fatally, as gunfire broke out at a Zion residence early Sunday morning less than an hour after police first visited the residence.

Zion police first responded to the 2900 block of Gideon Avenue for a report of loud noise shortly after 1 a.m. Police found about a dozen people standing in the street near a parked car and advised them to go inside. The crowd complied and police left the scene.

They returned about 40 minutes later to find Vontrell J. McMath, 22, of Zion, sprawled out on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to upper chest. McMath was taken to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead.

Three other people were also shot, but police were not prepared to release their names Sunday evening as the investigation continued.

One victim had only a superficial scratch wound near his ribs on the left side of his torso. He was treated and released from Vista East Medical Center.

A third man was found walking in the area of the shooting with a bullet wound to the left side of his abdomen. He underwent surgery to repair internal injuries and is currently listed in critical condition at Vista East Medical Center.

The fourth shooting victim fled the scene in a vehicle after a bullet pierced the left side of his lower back. Police took him into custody after a short chase by Waukegan and Gurnee Police Departments. He was treated and released from Condell Memorial Hospital in Libertyville.

Police believe the shootings followed an argument that occurred inside the residence during what appears to have been a party. Police were still interviewing attendees of the party as of Sunday evening.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller plans to perform an autopsy on McMath Monday.
