Pension series gave distorted view
I am very disappointed with the Daily Herald's four part series on the pension crisis in Illinois. Blaming the problems on teacher pensions and then focusing on high-paid administrators in the same breath paints a distorted view of the situation. Where was the part that mentioned the average teacher pension is around $42,000?
Also, trying to compare teacher pensions to those retirees on social security is inaccurate. What about retirees who collect both social security and pension? Where is it mentioned that teachers do not get the benefit of both social security and pension like those in the private sector?
Finally, to try and somehow blame the whole Illinois debt fiasco on teacher pensions is outrageous. How about placing the blame where it really belongs - on an incompetent legislature that for years has continued to misappropriate funds targeted for education.
Sadly, the children in our schools are the ones who will suffer because of the actions of our politicians. Maybe they should take a moment to reflect on how they got where they are today. They should think about that one teacher who made a lasting impression. What if that teacher hadn't been there because he or she decided to work in a better-paying job?
