Health care will improve life for all

Health care reform has been long overdue in this country. Skyrocketing health care costs impact those of us with plans through our employers, as well as those who are left to go without because they cannot afford to maintain coverage on their own.

I've personally seen the cost of my prescription literally double in the last year simply because the company my plan is through decided they were lowering the amount of the cost that would be covered under my plan, which is a PPO, and my doctor is in my network.

I can also speak to the fact that a year or so ago, my older brother who is without health coverage experienced some heart-related issues that required his hospitalization for a few days.

The cost of his tests and procedures was literally in the tens of thousands of dollars. His only reprieve was his cardiologist took pity on him and agreed to provide ongoing treatment at his private practice for free.

However, my brother and his wife still face mountains of bills simply because they were unable to afford medical coverage in the first place, then were faced with an urgent need to seek care.

I'm sure there are countless others throughout the country facing similar, if not worse, dilemmas.

This positive step we've made is the first step toward alleviating all Americans from the burdensome costs and sometimes unavailability of health insurance when facing situations that require medical attention.

I am proud to say I campaigned for, and voted for President Obama, and delighted he is fighting for the betterment of ALL Americans, despite what his detractors try to portray.
