Fendley adds IBCA coaching honor to her resume
When she was a student at Rolling Meadows High School, Mary Fendley earned numerous awards for her athletic endeavors as a standout swimmer, basketball and softball player.
Years later, she is still earning accolades for her accomplishments in prep sports.
Fendley has been the girls basketball coach at Hersey High School for the past 12 years.
After guiding the Huskies (27-9) to their first appearance in the IHSA state finals (fourth-place finish) this past March, Fendley has been voted Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District 4 co-coach of the year.
"It's a really nice honor to receive, and I'm truly grateful to the IBCA," said Fendley, who owns a career record of 249-127. "This award is a reflection of the commitment and hard work that my girls put in this season, and before. Getting to coach those girls downstate was the greatest honor."
Fendley was honored at the IBCA banquet at Illinois State University last Saturday.
Softball
The University of Chicago pounded out 19 hits, including a home run and 2 doubles by senior Kathleen Duffy (Barrington) as it defeated Lawrence 8-0 and 7-2.
Freshman third baseman Kim Cygan (Barrington) had a pair of RBI and capped the Maroons' 5-run fifth inning with a 2-run single.
Duffy gave the Maroons (19-8-1) a 2-0 first-inning lead with a 2-run home run to left field.
The blast was the 17th of Duffy's career, tying her for the top spot on the Chicago all-time list.
Men's soccer
Mike Mertel, a standout athlete from Hoffman Estates High School will be continuing his education as well as his soccer career at Augustana this fall. He becomes the newest member of coach Brenton Joseph's 2010 recruiting class.
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound Mertel earned three varsity letters as a defender for coach Matt Sriver's Hawks.
Mertel was a two-time Daily Herald special mention all-area selection and served as a team captain as a senior.
Augustana finished fourth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in 2009 with a 3-2-2 league mark.
Men's baseball
For the first time since 1999, the North Central College baseball team has earned a place in the NCAA Division III national rankings, occupying the No. 30 position in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball News Top 30 Poll.
The Cardinals (23-5) received 22 points and are one of five teams new to the top 30.
Matt Burke (Palatine), Peter Romanello (Lake Zurich), Micah Yarbrough (Grayslake Central), Dan Launhardt (Schaumburg) and Andrew Wulbecker (Hoffman Estates) are on the Cardinals' roster.
Wulbecker doubled in Saturday's 23-14 win over Wheaton and Yarbrough (3-0) picked up the win in 4 innings of relief.
Girls basketball camp
Hoffman Estates High School will conduct a girls summer basketball camp program for girls who will be in fifth through eight grade. Camps will run Monday through Friday from June 21 through July 1.
Fifth and sixth grade times are 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Seventh and eighth grade times are noon to 1:30 p.m.

Men's golf
Carthage sophomore Dan Parks (Hersey) shot a 79 and finished eighth in the Lawrence University Spring Invitational.
• Freshman Ben Schroeder (Mundelein) tied for ninth with an 80. Schroeder scored Carthage's first-ever hole-in-one on the 151-yard fifth hole with an 8-iron. "The wind was a little in my face," he said. "But the ball hit right in front of the hole, hung on the lip for awhile and then dropped."
The tournament was played at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Hortonville, Wis.
Rugby
Army continued its undefeated season defeating Navy at Annapolis 43-24.
With Fly Half Cadet Corporal Kaitlyn Kelly (St. Viator), Army opened the first round of the USA Rugby National Championships with a 62-8 win over the University of Delaware.
In the quarterfinals, Army defeated UCLA 52-0 advancing for the first time in team history to the Final Four.
Army will meet defending national champ Penn State in the semifinals this week.
Men's gymnastics
Thomas Kelley (Libertyville) contributed to Michigan's NCAA national title at West Point academy in New York.
Michigan was ranked fourth going into the meet and finished first in prelims. The Wolverines then upset Stanford, Oklahoma and Illinois in the finals.
Kelley contributed four scores out of the six events.
Michigan's men's gymnastics team will have the opportunity to visit the White House and meet the president as a result of the championship.
Football
Senior Mike O'Donoghue, a multisport standout from Mundelein High School, will be playing at Augustana.
He plans on joining the storied Viking grid program, led by coach Jim Barnes, after enrolling this fall.
O'Donoghue was a remarkably versatile weapon for coach Bob Stone at Mundelein. The team captain and MVP not only played safety and running back, but chipped in on special teams by returning both kickoffs and punts and doing some place kicking as well.
On defense, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound O'Donoghue recorded an area-best 5 interceptions and more than 90 tackles as a senior.
He also led the Mustangs in rushing, carrying 92 times for 326 yards and two touchdowns. He earned all-area recognition from the Daily Herald and was a Daily Herald "Player of the Week" honoree after rushing for 95 yards, making 12 tackles and scoring the only touchdown in his final high school game.
O'Donoghue also competed in baseball and basketball at Mundelein. The shortstop and right-handed pitcher is off to a great start in his senior baseball season, sporting a slugging percentage of over .800 for a 13-2 Mustang club.
O'Donoghue joins an Augustana program with an outstanding tradition that includes 21 College Conference of Illinois and
Wisconsin titles, four NCAA Division III national championships, 22 CCIW "Players of the Year" and 25 academic All- America selections.
The Vikings finished 6-4 in 2009 and have not experienced a losing season since 1978.
