Police nab armed Carol Stream robbery suspect
A 25-year-old Broadview man faces numerous charges after police say he robbed a Carol Stream liquor store at gunpoint early Saturday and then was involved in a one-car accident as he fled.
Julius S. Reed was apprehended at the corner of Turner and Prospect avenues in Glen Ellyn after the Volvo he was driving hit a retaining wall at the T-intersection.
Authorities said a police officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of the car used by two armed robbers at Discount Tobacco and Liquor in Carol Stream heading east on Pennsylvania Avenue. The officer began following the car and Reed lost control of his vehicle and crashed.
"He was stunned from the crash," Carol Stream Sgt. John Jungers said.
Police said two men entered the liquor store at 167 S. Schmale Road about 11:55 p.m. Friday, displayed handguns and demanded money. They left with an undisclosed amount of cash, some liquor and cigarettes.
Their car first was spotted by Wheaton police before the suspects drove into Glen Ellyn.
Carol Stream police continue to investigate and are looking for the second man and anyone else who might have been in the car with Reed.
Reed was charged with aggravated battery, reckless conduct, mob action, aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon and lack of a firearm owners identification card. Bond was set at $300,000 and he remains in DuPage County jail. His next court date is May 17.
