Let's stress how to turn left
One of the hardest things about driving seems to when it is safe to make a left turn. Today's story about two kids turning left (I assume) into Waubonsee Community College, and getting hit by a truck was heartbreaking. From the article, it sounded as if they had turned prematurely in front of the truck, which was unable to stop.
And the accident of Jerry Martinez, who ran into someone making an improper left turn and surely should have known better, was also heartbreaking.
I see near-misses day after day at Route 64 and Route 31, of cars trying to creep out in front of speeding traffic, to make a left turn and nearly getting creamed.
More lights and controls surely aren't the answer. My suggestion? Implement a concentration on proper left turns in driver's ed classes. Focus on timing, the importance of waiting for your chance, and the penalties if you don't.
We live in a hurry-hurry world, and if you can have kids practice, practice, practice left turns before getting their licenses then we may not see the sad headlines that we had today.
