Iowa hires Kirk Speraw as assistant coach

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Iowa coach Fran McCaffery has hired former Central Florida coach Kirk Speraw as an assistant.

Speraw was recently fired after 17 seasons at Central Florida, where he is the winningest coach in school history.

Speraw is a native of Sioux City, Iowa. He played for the Hawkeyes in the late 1970s under former coach Lute Olson.

McCaffery says in a statement released Friday that Olson recommended Speraw highly during a conversation at this year's Final Four, adding that it's great to have a Hawkeye on his staff.

Speraw joins Andrew Francis as assistant on McCaffery's staff.

McCaffery was hired last month to replace Todd Lickliter.
